Power of Self Belief

Grayson the Go-Getter Gopher Fable
A story about the power of self belief.

Grayson Green was a little gopher. He doubted that he could do any of the things that regular gophers do, because of his size. He thought he was just a misfit.

But then one day…

Digging burrows was the favorite pastime of the Green family of gophers. They spent as much time as possible digging deep and narrow tunnels where they could comfortably relax during their downtime.

Grayson was the youngest member of the Green family, but he always shied away from burrowing. He was always nervous that whenever he did build a tunnel, his siblings would tease him about how shallow and tiny it was.

Grayson’s mom noticed her son hiding in the background while the other kids were digging and decided to talk with him.

“Grayson, honey,” she said, “How about joining me and your Papa while we dig our burrows?”

“Aw, Mama, I just don’t know if I have what it takes to be a gopher!” he remarked. “My paws are so tiny and my claws are so short. I can’t possibly dig as impressively as the older kids!”

Mama Green realized that he was comparing his abilities to his siblings’, and offered a word of encouragement. “Grayson, my darling, only you know what’s good enough for yourself. Never mind what anybody else is doing. You have what it takes to dig a burrow that’s perfect for you, regardless of what anybody else says!”

With that word from Mama Green, he felt encouraged, and reminded himself that as long as the burrow was deep and wide enough for his tiny body to fit, it’d be perfect!

He spent the next few hours happily digging away, knowing that he had the ability to make the burrow his own. When he was done, he shouted, “Mama, look! Look at this burrow that I dug all by myself! And it’s just perfect for me!” Mama Green felt pride in her son’s self-confidence and gave him the tightest hug.

“I knew you could do it, son! All it takes is just a little self-belief!”

So, what is the Moral?

You won’t know what you’re capable of until you first believe you can do it.

Grayson spent much of his young life watching what his older siblings were doing and comparing himself to them. Each time he did that, he would come up disappointed because he was unable to do many of the things they did.

In Grayson’s mind, doing things the way they did was the only way to achieve the happiness and success that they achieved.

The downside to that approach to life is the possibility of being stuck in the same place for a very long time. Grayson’s self-doubt when he compared himself to his siblings prevented him from trying to dig his own burrow.

The same is true in life for us. We allow others to set the bar for “the ideal accomplishment.” When we fall short, we lose our self-confidence.

Having self-belief is the first step in breaking away from the mold that others have set for you. Only you know what works well for you, so set your own bar and work towards reaching it. That is the true formula for success and accomplishment.

The other person’s shoe rarely fits because your feet are a different size and shape. Declare who you are! Find your own shoes that fit your size and ability.

The best way to avoid disappointment is to avoid the standards that others set and focus on setting your own. Think about what makes you truly happy and start on the journey to achieving that. The people on the outside are incapable of taking your joy away when you hit the mark.

When you know what you want, you start to believe in your ability to achieve it. The next step is to start walking towards your goal with confidence and resolve.

Self-Reflection Questions:

  1. How do I know when a goal that I set is truly attainable?
  2. What are some factors that cause me to doubt my own abilities?
  3. How much of an influence does the negativity of others have on my desire to achieve greatness?

Power of Resilience

The Confident Cactus Fable
A story about the power of resilience.

Caleb Collins, the youngest cactus in the Collins family, wondered if he would be able to make it through the drought. See how he does it and thrives!

The Collins family were proud cacti. Although all cacti in the area were known to be able to withstand the terrible Arizona droughts, the Collins family believed they had special strengths.

“What makes us different from all the other cacti, mom?” asked Caleb.

“Well, honey,” started his mom, “the Collins family has always been resilient.” She continued, “Even when the droughts became unbearable for other families, we’ve always managed to pull through.”

And during the rainy season, Caleb began to realize why. He noticed his parents used a special technique for storing water.

As the rain came pouring down, Caleb’s mom and dad forced their pores open and collected as much water as possible. Caleb knew they were on to something, so he decided to follow suit.

When the drought hit, the Collins family started using up their water stores like everyone else. But when it got really hard to stay hydrated, Caleb’s parents reached deep down and pulled up their water reserves.

Again, he mimicked what they did and realized that he was now more hydrated than the other cacti around. “Wow, we really are resilient cacti!” exclaimed Caleb. “I thought we would dry up and wither, but you guys showed me how to reach for my reserves and fuel myself from within.”

“Yes, son,” said his dad. “Even when the situation you’re in seems impossible to beat, always trust and believe in your ability to persevere.”

From that point on, Caleb showed resilience in anything he set his mind to achieve.

So, what is the Moral?

When you have resilience, you have the strength to overcome the toughest situations.

With each changing season, the Collins family never knew what to expect. In many cases, the new year’s dry season was worse than the one before. They knew that, in order to stay hydrated, they would have to show resilience.

Their example of finding the strength to dig deep encouraged Caleb to do the same.

Sometimes, the circumstance that you’re faced with seems insurmountable. You look at your situation in fear and give up before you even try to beat it. But the truth is you always have enough fight in you to win even the toughest battles.

Self-belief is the answer to questions about your ability to pull yourself up and out of a challenging situation.

Although you feel like you’re using your last ounce of strength, there’s always a little more to rely on.

Being confident means knowing that you have the answers even when they’re not readily apparent to you.

It means knowing that even the longest journey from the starting point to the destination consists of a series of steps. Putting one foot before the other makes any goal feel within reach.

Self-Reflection Questions:

  1. Which personal situations require my resilience?
  2. How do I know when to reach for the support of my friends and family?
  3. How do I get the strength to get past an emotionally difficult experience?
  4. What can I do to welcome the storm in order to dance in the rain?

Prayer and meditation are my rock during stressful moments.

Prayer And Meditation Are My Rock During Stressful Moments

Prayer and meditation are my connection to the source of peace. When I am stressed, praying and meditating help me to stay calm.

I stand firm on prayer and meditation when the waves of uncertainty come my way.

Prayer is my way of getting my inner self into focus. When I feel myself getting overwhelmed by responsibilities, I am able to pray as a way to clear my mind and organize my thoughts.

When I pray, I build up my faith. I speak to my Creator, sharing my fears, thoughts, and feelings. I pray in a quiet place, where I can shut off the noise from the world.

After I pray, I sit in silence and wait. I listen to the voice of peace that speaks to me in stillness.

When I meditate, I strengthen the core muscles of my being. Meditation keeps me from drowning in fear and stress.

I strengthen my mind against negativity by meditating. I am stronger than negative thoughts. When I meditate I think of things that are pure, lovely, and right. The more I meditate about goodness, the more it becomes a part of me.

Whatever I set my mind on, I become. Therefore, I think lofty thoughts. When I pray I declare my dreams as reality.

Prayer is an act of faith. I know that there is someone bigger than me who cares for me.

I do not have to face the world alone. What a joy it is to know that I do not have to figure everything out by myself! There are ears ready to hear me when I call. All I have to do is sit quietly in prayer and meditation.

Self-Reflection Questions:

1. How can I increase the time I spend in prayer and meditation?
2. What is an important prayer that I have today?
3. What have I set my mind on?

I relieve stress through music.

I Relieve Stress Through Music

I am fully capable of managing my stress. The tools necessary to increase peace in my life are within my reach. I use a variety of methods to relieve me of my worries and increase tranquility, including listening to music.

My choice of music directly relates to how I feel. I listen to a variety to music to assist in transforming my mood. Soft music helps me relax when I feel overwhelmed. Upbeat music infuses me with joy.

Music has a powerful and positive effect on me. As the melody fills the air, it carries my stress away. I feel my constraints melting away with every note so I can rest in complete harmony.

When I close my eyes and focus on the sounds of the music, I shift my attention away from the cares of the world. Music transports me away from the concrete world into a realm of total peace. I have compiled playlists with my favorite songs to play throughout the day.

I play music in my car to start my day off right. I bring music with me to the office to play in the background during the day. Music lifts my spirit and keeps me motivated. When my thoughts become too much for me to handle, I use music to quiet my mind.

Today, I choose to turn to music as a soothing source of peace. I allow the beat of tranquility to flow through my body. My stress dissipates and peace is restored when I fill the room with soothing music.

Self-Reflection Questions:

1. What type of music makes me feel calm?
2. What part of my day could use a boost of music?
3. How can music help me relax?

My ability to succeed is unlimited

My ability to succeed is unlimited.

The only limitations on my success are those I impose on myself. External limits on my success are non-existent. I am the only real limitation in my life. I manage my beliefs and eliminate negative thinking from my mind.

My faith in myself is growing exponentially. I am excited by my potential.

I have everything I need to be immensely successful. I am a talented person with all the resources I require to begin accomplishing any goal that interests me. Any additional resources I may need in the future are easy for me to acquire.

I am creative, flexible, and tenacious. I can solve any challenge in the simplest and most clever manner. I have the will to continue forward in spite of any obstacles.

Success is a destination that I regularly reach.

I am open to success. Some people are afraid of success. I crave and enjoy success. Each success I attain makes me more comfortable and familiar with success. Each success convinces me further that I can accomplish anything I desire. I am unlimited in my ability to succeed.

I can do anything I set my mind to.

Today, I accept that my ability to achieve and succeed is unlimited. I am making big plans for my future and fully expect to achieve them. The faith I have in my future is bigger and better than ever.

Self-Reflection Questions:

  1. What limits do I impose upon myself? Why do I do that?
  2. What would I attempt to accomplish if my belief in myself were unlimited?
  3. What are my greatest strengths? How can I use them to my advantage?

I choose not to allow unnecessary stress to control me

I Choose Not To Allow Unnecessary Stress To Control Me

I let go of unnecessary stress in my life to make way for peace. I deserve peace and recognize its value for my health, productivity and relationships.

I consciously embrace peace when I find myself facing stressors and I refuse to waste energy on things that are outside my control.

While I recognize that there are situations in my life that will cause stress regardless of what I do, I assess each situation to determine if this stress is beneficial or pointless. I know I am free to remove that stressor from my life.

I am responsible for my own well being.

I can choose how stress affects me and how I respond to this glitch in my day. If I am stuck in a traffic jam, for example, I choose to see it as an opportunity to listen to audio books or sing along with my favorite tunes.

Stress does not control me or dictate what kind of day I am having. I control my own responses and choose to make them positive, because this path leads to greater peace and productivity.

Self-Reflection Questions:

1. Are there any unnecessary stressors in my life that I can eliminate?
2. Why do I hang onto things that unnecessarily stress me out?
3. What is a common, but unavoidable, source of stress that I could respond to more positively?
